Low-Level Light Treatment (LLLT) for Dry Eye

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is a transformative technology that uses non-visible wavelengths of light to activate, repair, and improve the functioning of cells. Its non-ionizing energy harnesses the power of low-level light to stimulate cellular activity, accelerate tissue repair, and reduce inflammation.

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) uses specific wavelengths of non-invasive light to gently stimulate cellular activity and support the body’s natural healing process. It may help reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and promote tissue repair—without needles, medication, or downtime.

At SK Eyecare, LLLT is used primarily as part of our Dry Eye treatment approach, particularly for patients with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). It may also be used to help manage chronic blepharitis and support healing of recurrent styes and stubborn chalazia.

Beyond its benefits for the eyes and eyelids, LLLT has also been studied for its effects on skin health, including supporting collagen production and improving the appearance of fine lines, texture, and scars.

A Gentle, Non-Invasive Approach

LLLT is comfortable, non-invasive, and requires no downtime, making it a convenient option for patients looking for a gentle approach to managing inflammation and supporting healthier eyelids and skin tissue.

How does LLLT work?

A “light sauna” for your eyelids.

LLLT uses gentle LED light to deliver specific wavelengths of light to the skin around the eyes. The treatment creates a soothing, warming sensation—almost like a “light sauna” for your eyelids—while the light energy works beneath the surface.

The warmth helps soften thickened oils within the meibomian glands and support healthier gland function. Healthy meibomian glands release oils that help prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked or do not function properly, they can contribute to dry eye symptoms.

By supporting meibomian gland function and reducing inflammation, LLLT helps improve the quality and stability of the tear film.

At SK Eyecare, we use specific wavelengths of red, blue, and yellow light as part of our LLLT treatments. Your treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may be combined with other dry eye therapies when appropriate.

The LLLT Treatment

The LLLT procedure treats the full face and neck. Each LLLT session takes approximately 15 minutes, with treatments typically performed once a week for a series of 6–10 sessions, depending on your individual needs and treatment goals. After each session, you can resume your normal activities with no downtime.

LLLT can be used on its own or combined with other dry eye treatments for a more comprehensive approach to improving eyelid and ocular surface health.
