Using  Radiofrequency (RF) with IPL

Radiofrequency (RF) can be combined with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to provide a more comprehensive approach to managing dry eye associated with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

While IPL uses targeted pulses of light to address inflammation and abnormal blood vessels around the eyes, RF uses controlled heat to warm the eyelid tissues and support healthier meibomian gland function.

Together, these technologies can address different factors that contribute to MGD while also providing aesthetic benefits for the surrounding skin.

What is RF & How Does it Work?

Radiofrequency (RF) uses controlled electromagnetic energy to gently heat the skin and underlying tissues. The warmth reaches the deeper layers of the skin and can support collagen production and tissue remodeling, helping improve the appearance and firmness of the skin over time.

When used around the eyelids, the gentle heat may also help soften thickened oils within the meibomian glands and support their ability to release oils more effectively.

Healthy meibomian glands produce the oily layer of the tear film, which helps slow tear evaporation and maintain a more stable tear film.

RF can therefore be used as part of a comprehensive approach to MGD and eyelid health, while also providing skin-tightening and rejuvenating benefits.

How Can RF & IPL Work Together?

IPL and RF work in different ways, allowing them to complement one another in the treatment of MGD.

IPL uses targeted pulses of light to help reduce inflammation and address certain abnormal blood vessels around the eyes. It may also help improve the function of the meibomian glands.

RF uses controlled heat to warm the eyelid tissues and deeper layers of the skin. This may help soften thickened gland oils, support meibomian gland function, and promote collagen production.

When combined, IPL and RF can provide a more comprehensive approach to addressing inflammation, meibomian gland function, and eyelid health.

Added Aesthetic Benefits

Because both treatments also affect the surrounding skin, combining IPL and RF may provide additional aesthetic benefits.

IPL may help improve the appearance of:

  • Redness

  • Visible blood vessels

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Sun-related skin changes

  • Skin texture

RF may help improve the appearance of:

  • Fine lines

  • Mild skin laxity

  • Skin firmness

  • Overall skin texture
