Dry Eye Diagnosis & Treatment
Dry Eye Disease is a chronic condition that occurs when your tears don’t provide enough moisture to keep your eyes comfortable. At SK Eyecare, we understand how frustrating dry eye symptoms can be. Millions of people experience burning, irritation, redness, a sandy or gritty sensation, excessive tearing, or fluctuating vision. When left untreated, these symptoms can interfere with reading, driving, screen time, and other everyday activities.
Dry eye isn't the same for everyone.
Our comprehensive dry eye evaluation helps us understand what's contributing to your symptoms by looking closely at your tears, meibomian glands, cornea, and eyelids.
Dry eye can have many causes, including extended screen time, environmental factors, hormonal changes, certain medications, and blocked or poorly functioning oil glands in the eyelids that affect tear quality.
Using advanced diagnostic technology and high-definition imaging, we evaluate your tear film and eyelid glands in detail. By identifying the the factors contributing to your dry eye, we can create a personalized treatment plan designed to address the underlying cause and improve your comfort and vision.
These tools analyze the stability, thickness, and volume of your tear quality on the eye’s surface;
Assess for any type and extent of damage on the cornea;
Evaluate the Meibomian Glands, detecting any area of loss, their structural integrity, and the quality and quantity of your natural oils;
Assess and manage conditions along the eyelid margins (i.e. stye, blepharitis, ocular rosacea, mites);
Interpret the level of redness in the white of the eye - conjunctiva - often indicating inflammation or irritation.
In Office Treatments We Offer
Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are tiny, soft inserts placed in the tear ducts to slow the drainage of tears. By helping your eyes retain their natural tears for longer, punctal plugs can improve moisture and comfort on the surface of the eye.
They may be recommended for patients who don't produce enough tears, have increased tear drainage, or rely frequently on artificial tears. Punctal plug placement is a quick, in-office procedure that can be incorporated into your personalized dry eye treatment plan.
Amniotic Membrane Therapy
For more advanced or persistent cases of dry eye, amniotic membrane therapy may be recommended to support healing of the eye's surface. The membrane contains naturally occurring components that can help calm inflammation and support the body's natural healing process.
Once placed on the eye, the membrane gradually dissolves while providing a protective layer to the ocular surface. It may help promote healing and improve comfort in patients with significant ocular surface irritation or damage.
Eyelid Exfoliation
This gentle, in-office treatment cleanses and exfoliates the eyelids and lashes to remove buildup, debris, and other irritants that can contribute to itching, irritation, and eyelid inflammation.
Eyelid exfoliation can be particularly helpful for patients with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and may be incorporated into a long-term dry eye management plan when appropriate. By keeping the eyelids and lash line clean, the treatment helps create a healthier environment for the meibomian glands and ocular surface.
The procedure is quick, comfortable, and can be a simple addition to your overall dry eye treatment plan.
