Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Dry eye can be frustrating, especially when symptoms continue despite using artificial tears, warm compresses, and regular eyelid hygiene.
For patients with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and inflammation contributing to their dry eye, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) may be an option. IPL uses controlled pulses of light around the eyes to help reduce inflammation and support healthier meibomian gland function.
At SK Eyecare, we evaluate the factors contributing to your dry eye to determine whether IPL is appropriate for you and how it may fit into your personalized treatment plan.
What Does IPL Treat?
IPL is a light-based treatment that may be helpful for patients with dry eye associated with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and eyelid inflammation.
IPL works in several ways to address factors that can contribute to dry eye:
Inflammation — IPL helps reduce inflammation around the eyelids and meibomian glands. When these glands become inflamed or blocked, they may not release enough of the oils needed to keep tears from evaporating too quickly.
Abnormal blood vessels — IPL targets certain visible blood vessels around the eyes that can contribute to ongoing inflammation. Reducing this inflammatory activity helps to create a healthier environment for the eyelids and ocular surface.
IPL for Skin Health
In addition to its use for dry eye, IPL can also be used to improve the appearance of the skin. Depending on the treatment area and goals, IPL may help with:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Uneven skin tone and texture
Facial redness
Visible blood vessels
Sun-related pigmentation
Rosacea-related redness
How Does IPL Work?
IPL uses controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light on the skin below and around the eyes. The light is absorbed by targeted structures in the skin, including blood vessels and pigmented areas, while also delivering gentle warmth to the surrounding tissue.
For patients with MGD, this warmth may help soften thickened oils within the meibomian glands, allowing them to function more effectively. IPL also helps reduce inflammation around the glands and eyelids.
By addressing inflammation and supporting healthier meibomian gland function, IPL can be an important part of a comprehensive dry eye treatment plan.
The IPL Treatment
IPL is an in-office treatment that typically consists of 4–6 sessions, depending on your individual needs and treatment goals. Sessions are generally scheduled about 3–4 weeks apart.
Each treatment takes approximately 45 minutes, and there is typically no downtime, allowing you to return to your normal activities afterward.
IPL may be used on its own or combined with other dry eye treatments for a more comprehensive approach.
When Will I Start to See Results?
Everyone responds differently to treatment. Some patients may begin noticing changes after a few sessions, while others may require a full series of treatments before seeing the benefits.
Your doctor will monitor your symptoms, eyelid health, and meibomian gland function throughout your treatment to determine how you are responding.
How Long Does It Last?
The duration of improvement varies from person to person and depends on the underlying cause of your dry eye, your response to treatment, and ongoing eyelid and dry eye management.
After completing an initial series of treatments, periodic maintenance treatments may be recommended to help support your results.
Is IPL Right for You?
If you've tried artificial tears, warm compresses, eyelid hygiene, or other dry eye treatments and are still experiencing symptoms, IPL may be worth exploring.
A comprehensive dry eye evaluation can help determine whether inflammation or Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is contributing to your symptoms and whether IPL may benefit you.
